The eight Vastu compass directions
Angles run clockwise from north. Each label covers a 45° sector; the number below is its centre. For example, northeast spans 22.5° to just below 67.5°.
North
Uttara · उत्तर
Traditionally associated with wealth and career.
Northeast
Ishanya · ईशान
Commonly used for a pooja room or meditation space.
East
Purva · पूर्व
Associated with sunrise; often considered for entrances.
Southeast
Agneya · आग्नेय
The traditional fire zone, commonly used for a kitchen.
South
Dakshina · दक्षिण
A commonly recommended direction for the head while sleeping.
Southwest
Nairitya · नैऋत्य
Commonly suggested for the main bedroom and heavier storage.
West
Paschima · पश्चिम
Traditionally associated with gains and storage.
Northwest
Vayavya · वायव्य
The traditional air zone, often suggested for a guest room.
These are common traditional associations, not predictions about health or prosperity. The compass measures direction; it does not certify Vastu compliance.

Rooms & entrance
Main door / entranceNorth or east often preferred; exact doorway position matters
Measure: Facing + home location
Stand just inside the main door and point the top of your flat phone outside, through the doorway.
This measures entrance facing. Take a separate reading from the home’s centre toward the door to find its location zone. A south- or west-facing home is not automatically unsuitable.
Contemporary Vastu guidance considers the entrance’s exact position along a boundary, not just the direction it faces. Keep the threshold clear, the door in working order and the entrance well lit. A toran or nameplate is a customary finishing touch, not a directional correction.
Pooja room / mandirNortheast (Ishanya); east is also used
Measure: Home centre → shrine
Stand at the centre of your home and point the top of your phone toward the pooja room or mandir.
Northeast is the commonly preferred pooja zone. East or another quiet, clean space may be used in a compact flat. Shrine location, worshipper facing and idol facing are three separate measurements.
A dedicated room is not essential: a small, clean mandir unit can serve the same household purpose. Keep it uncluttered and allow comfortable space for prayer. Advice on sharing a bathroom wall or placing a shrine below stairs varies with the layout and practice followed.
Prayer & idol facingEast commonly preferred; alternatives vary
Measure: Worshipper’s facing
Stand or sit where you normally pray and point the top of your phone forward, toward the shrine.
This is the direction you face while praying. East is commonly preferred. An idol facing you points in the opposite direction; its facing is not the same as its location in the home.
If the worshipper faces east toward an idol directly ahead, that idol faces west toward the worshipper. Published advice differs on alternatives, and some deity-specific practices differ too. Follow your family’s worship tradition rather than treating one compass sector as a rule for every deity.
Kitchen / rasoiSoutheast (Agneya); northwest alternative
Measure: Home centre → kitchen
Stand at the centre of your home and point the top of your phone toward the kitchen.
Southeast is the traditional kitchen zone; northwest is a commonly suggested alternative. This measures location, not the direction you face while cooking.
The kitchen is associated with Agni, the fire element. In an existing flat, its position may be fixed by services. Check cooking direction and worktop layout separately, while keeping ventilation, light and everyday usability central to the arrangement.
Main bedroomSouthwest (Nairitya) commonly preferred
Measure: Home centre → bedroom
Stand at the centre of your home and point the top of your phone toward the main bedroom.
Southwest is commonly suggested for the main bedroom. Bedroom location and the direction your head points while sleeping are separate checks.
Some joint-family guidance assigns the southwest bedroom to senior family members, while other practitioners select rooms differently. Keep the room restful and accessible for its occupants; do not infer sleeping direction from the room’s position.
Guest & children’s roomsNorthwest for guests; west appears in children’s-room guidance
Measure: Home centre → room
Stand at the centre of your home and point the top of your phone toward the guest room or children’s bedroom.
Northwest is commonly suggested for a guest room. Some practitioners suggest west for children’s rooms. Recommendations vary with occupants and the plan.
There is no single published room-allocation rule for every child, guest or older relative. Record the room’s location first, then consider bed facing, a comfortable temperature and a usable study area separately.
Living room & dining areaNorth/east often favoured for living areas; dining near kitchen
Measure: Home centre → room
Stand at the centre of your home and point the top of your phone toward the living or dining area.
North and east are commonly favoured for living areas. A dining area close to the kitchen is practical; published guidance also places it east or southeast of the living room.
The dining-area recommendation may be relative to the living room, not the whole home. In an open-plan flat, mark the different activity areas on your plan instead of treating the entire hall as a single point. Keep circulation clear.
Bathroom & toiletDetailed sub-zones vary by practitioner
Measure: Home centre → toilet
Stand at the centre of your home and point the top of your phone toward the toilet. Record the angle as well as the broad sector.
Many traditions keep the northeast free of toilets. Modern 16-zone advice may distinguish SSW, WNW and ESE; the eight-sector dial does not assess those finer zones.
Published sources disagree on acceptable bathroom and toilet placements, and sometimes mix bathing areas with toilets. Record the actual footprint on a plan rather than declaring the whole northwest or southwest suitable. In a flat, keep drainage, dryness and ventilation working well.
Kitchen items
Gas stove / hob & cooking directionFace east; hob often in kitchen’s southeast
Measure: Cook’s facing
Stand where you cook and point the top of your flat phone straight ahead, in the direction you face at the hob. Keep away from the metal appliance when taking the reading.
East is the commonly recommended cooking-facing direction. A hob in the southeast of the kitchen is a separate placement check measured from the kitchen’s centre.
Do not confuse a southeast kitchen, a southeast hob and an east-facing cook. They use two different centres and one facing direction. Allow useful separation between the hob and sink without sacrificing a workable preparation area.
Sink & drinking-water purifierNorth or northeast of the kitchen
Measure: Kitchen centre → fixture
Stand near the centre of the kitchen and point the top of your phone toward the sink or drinking-water purifier.
North or northeast within the kitchen is commonly suggested for water fixtures. Keep the reference centre at the kitchen, not the whole home, for this check.
Vastu separates water-related fixtures from the cooking fire. Existing plumbing may constrain relocation. Keep the sink clean, fix leaks and maintain a comfortable preparation gap between wet and cooking areas.
Refrigerator & grain storageSouthwest of the kitchen in the cited guidance
Measure: Kitchen centre → storage
Stand near the centre of the kitchen and point toward the refrigerator or grain-storage cabinet. Take the reading away from the appliance.
The cited kitchen guidance suggests southwest for the refrigerator and grain stock. This is placement within the kitchen, not the fridge door’s opening direction.
Different designers propose alternatives for large appliances. Retain ventilation clearances and convenient access, and use the manufacturer’s installation requirements when deciding where the fridge can actually fit.
Furniture & daily use
Bed & sleeping head directionHead south; east commonly accepted
Measure: Foot of bed → pillow
Point the top of your phone from the foot of your bed toward the pillow. Keep away from the metal bed frame.
This is the direction your head points while lying down. South is commonly recommended, with east as an alternative; north is traditionally avoided.
“Sleep south” means the head is toward south and feet toward north, not that the bedroom must lie in the south. Compare the head direction with the room location as two separate readings.
Study table & work deskEast or north for study; home-office advice varies
Measure: Seated person’s facing
Sit in your study or desk chair and point the top of your phone forward, in the direction you look while working.
East or north is commonly suggested for a child’s study-facing direction. Home-office prescriptions differ; the cited article distinguishes office placement and facing from a child’s study.
A desk being on the north side of a room does not mean the person faces north. Measure while seated. Provide good task lighting, a supportive chair and usable space in front; bookshelf location is another separate check.
Mirror / dressing tableNorth or east wall commonly preferred
Measure: Room centre → wall
Stand at the centre of the room and point the top of your phone toward the wall holding the mirror.
North or east walls are commonly suggested for mirrors. This measures the wall’s location; a mirror on the north wall generally has its reflective face pointing south.
Traditional bedroom advice often avoids mirrors reflecting the bed. Check the reflection visually, not with the compass. The wall location and the direction the glass faces are opposite references in a simple rectangular room.
Locker / tijori & valuablesSouthwest placement; opening toward north/NE in cited guidance
Measure: Room centre → safe
Stand at the centre of the room and point toward the locker or safe. For its opening-facing direction, take a separate reading pointing outward from the closed front.
Southwest placement and a front opening toward north or northeast are suggested in the cited guidance. Placement and opening-facing direction are separate.
For a hinged door, “opens north” refers to the outward-facing front of the safe, not the arc through which its door swings. A safe located south of you can have a north-facing front. This is traditional symbolism, not a promise of financial growth.
Wardrobes & heavy storageSouth, west or southwest commonly used
Measure: Room centre → furniture
Stand at the centre of the room and point toward the wardrobe or heavy storage cabinet.
South and southwest are commonly used for heavy storage; west also appears in furniture guidance. Keep the northeast and central circulation areas lighter.
Apply a room-centre reference for furniture within a room, and a home-centre reference for a store room. Keep doors and windows usable instead of fitting heavy cupboards solely by compass sector.
TV unit & sofaTV southeast; heavy seating west/SW in cited guidance
Measure: Living-room centre → furniture
Stand near the centre of the living room and point toward the TV unit or sofa. Take the reading away from speakers and electronics.
The cited living-room guidance puts the TV in the southeast and heavy seating in the west or southwest. Measure each item separately from the living-room centre.
These are furniture locations, not the direction a viewer faces. Allow an easy viewing angle, clear walkways and natural ventilation. Electronics and speaker magnets can distort the compass reading close to the TV.
Bookshelves & sacred booksPurpose-specific; detailed learning zone WSW
Measure: Room centre → shelf
Stand at the centre of the room and point toward the bookshelf. Note the angle if you are using a finer-zone plan.
The cited guidance distinguishes study books in WSW from sacred books in northeast. This tool uses eight broad sectors, so it does not identify WSW as a separate zone.
Keep religious books with a clean, dedicated prayer collection; regularly edit study papers and unused books. Avoid blocking the entrance or home centre with heavy shelving. The book type and chosen reference plan matter more than a generic “bookshelf direction”.
Plants & water
Tulsi plant / Tulsi vrindavanEast or northeast
Measure: Home centre → plant
From the centre of your home, point toward the Tulsi plant or its proposed balcony or courtyard position.
East or northeast is commonly suggested for Tulsi in the cited plant guidance. Check the plant’s actual sunlight and drainage as well as its direction.
In a flat, a balcony planter may be more practical than a dedicated Tulsi structure. Use the home-centre reference for its position in the home. If following a balcony-specific plan, state that different reference explicitly.
Money plantSoutheast in the cited plant guidance
Measure: Home centre → plant
Stand near the centre of your home and point toward the money plant or its intended spot.
Southeast is suggested for money plants in the cited guidance. Plant recommendations are species-specific and differ among practitioners.
General advice to put greenery in east or north is not identical to a species-specific money-plant prescription. Choose a position that also suits the plant’s light and care requirements. Direction does not guarantee prosperity.
Aquarium & indoor water fountainNorth, east or northeast commonly suggested
Measure: Living-room centre → feature
Stand near the centre of the living room and point toward the aquarium or indoor fountain.
North, east or northeast appear in living-room guidance for aquariums; north is also suggested for fountains. This is an indoor feature, not an overhead tank.
Keep water circulating and the feature maintained. Published guidance uses both room-level and home-level references; use the level specified by the plan you follow. An aquarium is optional décor, not a required remedy.
Layout & structure
Balcony, windows & open spaceNorth and east often kept lighter and open
Measure: Home centre → opening
Stand near the centre of your home and point toward the balcony or window you want to locate.
Contemporary Vastu guidance often keeps north and east open, well lit and less cluttered. Balcony location is different from the direction its view faces.
For a balcony’s outward view, stand at its opening and take a separate outward-facing reading. In a fixed apartment layout, daylight, shading and cross-ventilation help determine how comfortably openings work.
StaircaseReview the footprint and home centre on the plan
Measure: Home centre → stair footprint
Stand near the centre of your home and point toward the staircase. Mark the whole stair footprint on the plan, not just its first step.
Keep the home’s central area open where feasible. Stair advice needs the plan, occupied footprint and circulation; the direction you climb alone is not a Vastu assessment.
The sources emphasise openness of the centre and avoiding an under-stair mandir. A compass can locate the stairs but cannot assess a complete staircase layout, proportions or structural design.
Overhead tank & underground water storageSeparate overhead and underground systems
Measure: Plan centre → tank footprint
Use the centre of the relevant home or plot plan and point toward the tank’s projected position. Take a reading from an accessible spot; the roof itself is not necessary.
Overhead tanks are treated differently from wells and low-level water features. The cited kitchen guidance suggests a west-side overhead tank; other guidance discourages northeast/SE overhead placement.
Do not transfer a northeast fountain recommendation to a heavy rooftop tank. Published water-storage advice is not consistent. Record whether the tank is above or below ground and whether the reference is the flat, building or plot before comparing recommendations.
No matching item. Try a broader term such as “water”, “room” or “storage”.
Your home Vastu walkthrough
Work through the home once with a floor plan. Tick each step as you go; ticks last while this page is open.
How Vastu Shastra is used in Indian homes
Households often consult Vastu when choosing a flat, planning an independent house, placing a mandir, setting a cooking counter or arranging beds and storage. Vastu links spatial planning with the five elements: earth (Prithvi), water (Jal), fire (Agni), air (Vayu) and space (Akasha). The practical starting point is a measured plan, not a list of decorative objects.
The Brahmasthan: your home’s centre
The central area is commonly called the Brahmasthan. Traditional and contemporary guidance often keeps it open and relatively uncluttered. It is an area on the plan, not a ninth compass direction. On a simple rectangle, begin with the intersection of the diagonals; an L-shaped or cut-out plan needs a consistent method for finding its centre.
Eight directions, 16 zones and entrance padas
This compass labels eight 45° sectors. A 16-zone method divides the circle into 22.5° sectors and distinguishes directions such as SSW and WNW. Entrance padas are subdivisions along the building’s boundary; they are not just degree ranges on a dial. The full Vastu Purusha Mandala has a more detailed grid and symbolic structure than the north-up reference chart on this page.
Vastu for a rented flat or an existing 2BHK / 3BHK
Start with the layout you have. Furniture, a study-facing direction, plants and a small mandir are often easier to adjust than a kitchen or toilet connected to fixed plumbing. Measure before moving anything and compare recommendations using the same reference. A southeast kitchen alone does not establish that an entire flat is Vastu-compliant.
Wall clocks, photos, colours and symbolic remedies
Household guides also discuss wall clocks, family photographs, room colours, yantras, pyramids, crystals and salt bowls. These prescriptions vary considerably and do not share one universal compass placement. A clock’s wall location is different from its face direction, just like a mirror. Use a specific source or family practice for decorative items; the compass cannot verify that a remedy changes a home’s fortunes.
Is a south- or west-facing home unsuitable?
Facing alone is not a complete assessment. Contemporary practitioners also consider doorway position, proportions, room use, light and circulation. The sources below explicitly challenge the blanket idea that only north- or east-facing homes can work. This reference describes traditional associations, without presenting direction as a predictor of health, academic performance or finances.
Room location and facing direction are different
A kitchen can be in the southeast of a home while its cook faces east. To measure a room’s location, stand at the centre of the home and point toward that room. To measure facing, point in the direction a doorway, person or object faces. Use the centre of the whole home, not just one room, when mapping the home’s zones.
For an Indian flat or apartment, work from your own flat’s floor plan. Mark north on that plan using repeated compass readings, then map the rooms around its centre. An irregular layout may need a practitioner’s help to identify the reference centre.
Magnetic north or true north?
The tool shows which reference is active. Supported Safari and Android sensor readings use magnetic north until a location-based correction is available. Tap True north and allow location access to calculate magnetic declination on your device. Manual exploration is not a sensor measurement.
There is no single north setting shared by every Vastu practitioner. Use the same reference as your practitioner or plan, and record it with your readings. This matters near sector boundaries. The direction chart works throughout India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata; your actual home heading must be measured where you stand.
Get a steadier reading indoors
Remove magnetic phone cases, keep away from steel furniture and electrical appliances, and calibrate with a gentle figure-eight motion. Repeat the reading at nearby spots. If the readings vary, investigate interference before assigning a zone. Use Freeze once the reading settles to keep it on screen.
This tool uses eight broad direction sectors. Detailed 16-zone or 32-entrance-pada analysis needs a measured floor plan and a more specific method. For more context, read our Vastu directions guide, magnetic vs true north explanation, or open the general online compass.
Vastu compass questions
How do I use a Vastu compass online?
Open this page on a phone, tap Start Vastu compass and allow motion or orientation access if asked. Hold the phone flat, choose what you want to check, and point its top edge as instructed. The tool shows the heading, eight-direction Vastu sector and active north reference.
Can I use this Vastu compass in India without downloading an app?
Yes. It runs in your browser and works in India or elsewhere on a compatible phone with a compass sensor. No app download or account is needed. On iPhone, use Safari and allow motion access; on Android, try Chrome.
Should I use magnetic north or true north for Vastu?
Vastu practitioners use different conventions. Follow the north reference used by your practitioner or floor plan and keep it consistent across readings. The tool labels the active reference. True north may need location access to correct magnetic declination; a city name alone is not a home direction reading.
How do I check my main door facing direction?
Stand just inside the main door, face outside and point the top edge of your flat phone through the doorway. This is the facing direction. To find the entrance’s location zone instead, take a reading from the centre of the home toward the door.
Is an online Vastu compass accurate indoors?
Accuracy depends on your phone’s sensor and nearby magnetic interference. Move away from steel cupboards, appliances, speakers, magnets and reinforced walls. Calibrate the phone with a figure-eight motion and repeat readings at several nearby spots. A displayed degree is not a guarantee of one-degree accuracy.
Why does the compass show manual exploration?
The browser did not receive a usable compass reading, or sensor permission was denied. Manual mode lets you explore directions or enter a known heading, but it does not detect north or measure your home. Use a physical compass or a compatible sensor-equipped phone for a measurement.
What are Ishanya, Agneya, Nairitya and Vayavya?
These are common Indian names for the four diagonal directions: Ishanya is northeast (45°), Agneya is southeast (135°), Nairitya is southwest (225°), and Vayavya is northwest (315°). The angles are the centres of the eight equal compass sectors.
Does a Vastu compass tell me whether my whole home is Vastu-compliant?
No. It measures headings and helps map rooms and items. A complete assessment also considers the floor plan, doorway positions, proportions, occupied footprints and the method used. Eight compass sectors do not resolve 16-zone analysis or entrance padas.
Which major household items should I check for Vastu?
Start with the main entrance, kitchen, mandir, bedrooms and toilets. Then check the cooking-facing direction, sleeping head direction, study desk, mirror wall, safe, wardrobes, TV, plants and water features. Use the room centre for furniture inside a room and the home centre for a room’s location.
Where should I keep the gas stove, sink and refrigerator?
The cited kitchen guidance commonly places the hob in the kitchen’s southeast with the cook facing east, water fixtures in its north or northeast, and the refrigerator and grain storage in its southwest. These are kitchen-level placements; the kitchen’s location within the home is a separate check.
Can I follow Vastu in a rented flat without structural changes?
Begin by measuring and recording the existing layout. Movable furniture, study-facing direction, a small mandir and plants can often be adjusted more easily than fixed plumbing or entrances. Contemporary guidance also emphasises ventilation, light and clear circulation rather than assuming demolition is necessary.
